What is Gunpowder Green Tea?
Chinese Gunpowder Green Tea comes from Zhejiang Province, which lies south of Shanghai, China. This is its traditional home, although its production has since spread to other regions and countries. The name “Gunpowder Green Tea” has mysterious origins. One theory is that an English clerk dubbed it so after noting the leaves’ resemblance to lead shots used in muskets.
Another suggestion is that the word “gunpowder,” when spoken in the correct dialect, sounds like the Mandarin Chinese phrase for “freshly brewed.” There is yet another belief that it refers to the supposed crackling noise it makes while brewing. Other names associated with it include “Pearl Tea” and “Bead Tea.” It first emerged during the Tang Dynasty (618-907 CE) and has been popular ever since.
Gunpowder Green Tea Brewing Instructions
1, Put Tea leaves into a Tea Infuser or Filter (both available here).
2, Place the Tea-filled accessory in a cup or mug.
3, Boil fresh water and allow it to cool. Green Tea temperatures should be 80°C.
4, Infuse for 1 to 3 minutes. Any longer and you risk creating a bitter taste.
How to Serve: Consider honey or lemon. Alternatively, serve it without additions.
